Introduction to Basic Drugs Awareness for Adults and Young People - 1 day
This course uses an interactive training approach throughout the day, where participants will be encouraged to contribute in order to maximise learning. Open discussions, activities and group work will enable participants to explore their own attitudes to substance misuse and to share professional knowledge and experience of working with vulnerable groups of service users.
The aims of this course are to:
•Increase your knowledge, awareness and confidence in dealing with Legal Highs/Novel Psychoactive Substances.
•Provide some tools and harm reduction information for working with Legal Highs/Novel Psychoactives. •Provide a space for questions and concerns to be voiced regarding Legal Highs/Novel Psychoactives.
The course objectives are:
•Introduce people to the idea of Novel Psychoactive substances (what they are and what they can do).
•Explore relevant statistics and information regarding NPS
•Exploring the different categories of NPS use - giving relevant examples for each.
•Exploring the attempts to control legality issues around NPS including: purchasing online and in shops.
•Looking at the main risks/concerns around NPS use for users.
•Talking through the idea of ‘symptomatic response’ to NPS use with users.
•Introduce attendees to NPS identification tools and how to use them
•Provide harm reduction advice that can be given to NPS users.
•What are the key recommendations for working with NPS users in Sheffield?
•Information on referral services in the city for NPS use.

- Encourage discussion and thinking around current, relevant substance use issues (in particular looking at ‘Novel Psychoactive Substances’)
- Increase knowledge and understanding of the term substance use and what this means to our service users
- Consider your own personal attitudes towards substance use, addressing fears and anxieties around all substances
- Clarify your role when working with service users with substance use problems
- Increase confidence in resources used in assessment, referral and interventions with services user
- Identify further training needs
- Be introduced to the Cycle Of Change and how this can be applied in our work
- Understand the term ‘Substance Use’
- Understand different types of drug use
- Categorise drugs by effects (including looking at risks, harm reduction and interventions)
- Examine legal implications/classifications
- Consider different routes of administration
- Understand the ‘Bio – Psycho – Social' model
- Explore the different routes of administration
- Be more confident in working with NPS’s
- Basic assessment skills around ‘Novel Psychoactive Substances’
An introduction to Novel Psychoactive Substances ('Legal Highs') - Short seminar
A short course spilt into two parts:
Firstly a lecture style presentation updating professionals around Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS), followed by an interactive opportunity to use tools to idenitfy new substances and look at how we could work with people using NPS.
